Martha was the daughter of a prosperous sea captain who owned several shipyards. His 1788 journey to Boston is recorded by a neighbor Martha Ballard, made famous in Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's book A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812. She married Benjamin Vaughn in 1805.
