Object Description

This shuttle came to Winterthur with a loom that has been used in southeastern Pennsylvania for over 200 years. Weavers throw shuttles back-and-forth across a fabric's warp in order to create the perpendicular weft. Because they were often used for years by a weaver, shuttles became highly personal objects and were commonly decorated with punches or scribed lines.
