John Smibert (Painter)
03/24/1688-04/02/1751
"John Smibert accompanied Dr. Berkle to this country, arriving here in 1729. Born in Edinburgh in 1688, death overtook him on April 2, 1751. The 'Boston News-Letter' of April 4 reports the event as follows: 'John Smibert. On Tuesday last died here, much lamented, Mr. John Smibert, well known for many fine Pictures he has done here, and celebrated in Italy as well as Britain, for a good Painter, by the best judges. As a member of Society, he was a valuable Gentleman of a happy Temper, great Humanity and Friendship, a Kind Husband, tender Father, and steady Friend: But what is above all, an exemplary Christian, eminently so in Practice and constant Resignation to the Will of God. We hear his Funeral will be Tomorrow Evening.' Smibert was the most important painter of this period." (From card in object file 1958.1514).
