Origin Notes

Origin is Rhode Island or Massachusetts. The Rhode Island attribution is based on a card table labeled by Joseph Rawson with similar veneered oval mahogany panels. In addition, according to Montgomery, Israel Sack thought he had once owned this sofa and that it was made for a "Professor Brown" of Brown University by "a famous Providence cabinetmaker whose name he could not recall. Finally, the use of reeding to cap the back down to the handholds, the serpentine shape of the arms, and the square spade feet re seldom seen in Massachusetts furniture.
