Arthur B. Davies, who was born in Utica, New York, and spent his career in New York City, is best known for remote, timeless landscapes painted many oil sketches on a summer trip through California, Oregon, Washington, and parts of Canada in 1905; he later developed many of the sketches he completed on his western trip in larger compositions. Western scenery such as this California landscape is thought to have particularly influenced Davies’s work.
