Jonathan Danforth (of Middletown) was grandson of Thomas I, son of Thomas II; brother to Thomas III, Joseph Sr, Edward, and Samuel (of Middletown); uncle to Joseph Jr and Josiah; nephew of John (of Norwich); cousin to Samuel (of Norwich). Nineteen members of the Danforth family, spread over five generations, became invovled with manufacturing pewter or britannia. Jonathan (not to be confused with his uncle John, of Norwich) probably trained with his father Thomas II and brother Joseph Sr, completing his apprenticeship by c.1787-1788. After Joseph Sr's death in 1788, Jonathan took over the business, though he probably continued to use his brother's dies. In about 1790, Jonathan's younger brother William joined him in the business, but the arrangement was dissolved by 1794. It seems that William took over while Jonathan left pewtering behind; the latter was to be found a year later in Hartford, involved with land and mercantile transactions.
