Object Description

Anthony Rasch created fashionable, luxurious domestic silver items and monumental presentation silver in Philadelphia following his arrival from Europe in 1804 and until he relocated to New Orleans in 1820. The French neoclassical overtones of this pitcher's overall design include the graceful cast handle, elegant incorporation of several borders, and a footed platform base. His body of work is diverse and slightly uneven, but it is a record of direct European artistic influence and synergy within American silversmithing practices and patrons' tastes, particularly those expressed in Philadelphia during the heady commissions for War of 1812 heroes. Rasch has been the subject of a Winterthur master's thesis (2007).
