This temple piece came to Winterthur with a loom that has been used in southeastern Pennsylvania for more than two hundred years. Temple pieces are inserted into the warp to keep the fabric being woven from crumpling under the the tension introduced by the selvedge. By providing an opposing tension, it maintains the consistency of the warp's width.
