Giles Griswold (Maker)
10/08/1775-11/13/1840
Thomas Danforth IV, preserved correspondence from Giles Griswold to his father. Letters originated from Augusta in November 1818. Giles O. Griswold was the son of Giles and Eunice Griswold. On December 25, 1797, he married Lucy Brocket and they had three children. Between 1809 and 1810 Meriden Land Records exhibit deeds for property purchased by Griswold. In 1816 and 1822 he disposed of the same parcels of land. Between those dates, Griswold was probably in Augusta making pewter. For more on Giles Griswold's marks, see Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.222; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.132; and Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.102. See also C. Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.258 and Laughlin, Pewter in America, vol.2, p.83.
