Sarah Talley, of Brandywine Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, was born on December 8, 1781 into a large, affluent home. Her parents were Elihu Talley (1754-1833) and Lydia Forwood (1758-1795). Sarah, attending the Mary Sullevan School, stitched her siblings' names on her 1798 sampler, but not her parents' names. Sarah left school not long after completing her sampler, and soon after married Joseph B. Grubb (1781-1828), who was a miller. Sarah and Joseph had six children.
