Creator (Role)

Samuel Kilbourn (Maker)
1770-07/08/1839
Samuel Kilbourn possibly apprenticed with Thomas Danforth, III. Samuel formed a partnership with Jephtha Porter upon his arrival in Baltimore in 1813 or 1814; it appears that they worked together only until 1816. According to Laughlin, Samuel is the only pewterer working south of the Mason-Dixon Line to create hollowware, instead of only flatware. For more on Samuel Kilbourn's marks, see C. Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.264; Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.119-120; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.135; and Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.223. See also J.B. Kerfoot, American Pewter (1942), p.116 and Laughlin, Pewter in America (1981), vol.2, p.79-80.
