John Munns (Printer)
John Munns, Crayford
"John Munns, a calico-printer and gunpowder maker, was in partnership with Fenning and Halfhide, for some time before 1769 when the partnership was dissolved. Munns carried on the business at Crayford until his bankruptcy in July, 1784. The Mulhouse pattern-books contain 32 pictorial and floral designs from the Munns printworks and the Victoria and Albert Museum has a considerable number of Munns' design for block-printed textiles (see No. 18 inSection IA). Apart from the two designs illustrated here, a plate-printed handkerchief of a map of England, signed by John Munns, is in the possession of Mr. Jamie Campbell, London." Catalogue of a Loan Exhibition of English Chintz: English Printed Fabrics from their Origins until the Present Day; Victoria and Albert Museum, London. May 18th to July 17th, 1960, p. 25.
"Munns’ calico-printing manufactory was at Crayford, a town to the south east of London. A number of textile manufacturers were established there, taking advantage of the river Cray, a tributary of the river Thames, for the abundant water their work needed. Munns was in business from the 1760s until his bankruptcy in 1781, combining the trades of calico-printing and gunpowder-making."
