Anthony Imbert (Lithographer, publisher and seller)
1794/5-1834
"Imbert is known as one of America's pioneers in lithography. A first lieutenant in the French Navy, Imbert was taken prisoner by the British in 1810 and during his confinement studied drawing and painting. Shortly after his arrival in New York, he was commissioned to prepare thirty-seven lithographic plates for the illustrations in Colden's Memoir, celebrating the opening of the Erie Canal. His two-sheet panoramic print entitled Grand Canal Celebration: View of the Fleet Preparing to Form in Line has been viewed by scholars as a technical milestone in the pioneering art of American lithography."
