Richard Lee Sr was the father of Richard Lee Jr, also a pewterer. Richard Lee,Sr. was the eldest boy in a family of 16 children. He served several enlistments during the Revolutionary War. In 1802, Richard Lee returned to Springfield, Vermont where he married for the third time and peddled pewter and brass for his son. Throughout his life, Richard moved frequently and tried his hand at a number of professions, pewtering being just one of them. It appears that he learned the pewtering business in order to provide his son, Richard Lee Jr, with a living(Laughlin, Pewter in America, vol.1, p.121-122). For more on Richard Lee Sr's marks, see C. Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.265; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.136; and Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.224. See also Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.125 and Laughlin, Pewter in America (1981), vol.1, p.121-122.
