Origin Notes

Origin is Norwich or New Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut. At least a dozen chairs of this type have been found in the Norwich-New Lebanon area. They constitute what is possibly the largest group of surviving seventeenth-century American chairs. If they were made in Norwich, they could date as early as the 1660s. If they were made in Lebanon, they probably date around 1700, when that township was first settled.
