James Sibley was born in Thompson, Connecticut, and apprenticed to Stephen Sibley, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, as a silversmith. His working dates and locations are as follows: Albany, New York, 1801-1803; Canandaigua, New York, 1803-1836; Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1836-1847; Rochester, New York, 1847-1850. From 1847 to 1848 he is listed as a watchmaker.
