Walter's many commissions include the Gothic-style Moyamensing Prison (1831-35) and the Greek-Revival style Girard College for Orphans (1833-48). In 1851, he won the competition for the extension of the United States Capitol building and was appointed its fourth architect, a position he held until 1865. During his tenure, he was responsible for adding both the north and south wings and the dome. Walter also was a founder of the American Institute of Architects, and was elected its first Vice-President and 1857 and later president,. 1876-87.

John M. Butler (Printer)
John Butler's name is appended to a large number of prints. Butler was a plate print and print publisher in Philadelphia about 1850, and employed engravers. There is no evidence that Butler was an engraver himself. He later held public office in Philadelphia, and abandoned publishing. According to Stauffer, the earliest documented work associated with Butler is dated 1850.
