Silver coin originally struck in the Spanish colonial mint of Potosi or Mexico City. Previous cataloguer thought England as a George II silver shilling.

4. Inscription; Reverse, under groundline; "J7[5]7" [for 1757] struck in die, but overstruck by "WG"

Diameter of suspension hole is 1/8 inch (.125 inch). The weight printed in Quimby, page 426 is inaccurate. Analyzed 6/21/1973: Obverse = 92.41% silver, 7% copper, .23% gold, .18% lead. Reverse = 91.69% silver, 7.58% copper, .29% gold, .24% lead. Complete results in object file. The standard weight and purity of a pre-1757 silver 8 Reale should be compared to this medal's weight of 378.1 grains (15.7 dwt troy or (24.5 grams).
