Hugh Wishart (Maker)
Wishart listed himself in the New York city directories between 1794 and 1824 as a working goldsmith and silversmith and intermittently between 1826 and 1837, with no profession. These findings suggest that he retired in the mid 1820s. Little is known about his professional or personal life. That he was an accomplished craftsman, we can be sure; there is a large body of surviving silver bearing his name. Wishart was proficient at making flatware-including spoons, forks, skewers, marrow scoops, ladles, and sugar tongs-and hollowware-including tea sets, beakers, porringers, pipkins, pitchers, cake baskets, pap boats, salvers, punch bowls, soup tureens, and silver hilted swords.89
