Jacob Maentel was born in Kassel, Hessia, Germany, on October 15, 1778. He immigrated to America by 1811, when he applied for citizenship in York County, Pennsylvania. Maentel worked as a portrait painter in southeastern Pennsylvania, including the Schaefferstown area of Lebanon County, before moving to New Harmony, Indiana, in the late 1830s. There he continued to paint portraits and died about 1863. No official record of his death has been found.
