This rare creamware plate bears an overglaze printed scene portraying "The Sailor's Return." The square format of the design indicates that the design originally was intended for use on tiles, and a so-decorated Liverpool delftware tile is in the Winterthur collection (1961.0944).
A second very similar plate to the one shown here is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Both plates bear the same hand-painted (enamel) inscription, "JOHN & SARAH ARTIS, YARMOUTH, 1769," perhaps in reference to the couple's marriage or some other important event.
