This large cylindrical basket, made by a Native American artist, is comprised of wide wooden splints and has a low-domed, circular lid. The splints were dyed brown, dark blue, and yellow before being woven together in alternating colors. A carved stamp, probably made from a potato, was used to add repeated designs of “X” shapes and diagonal dotted lines to the basket’s exterior. Hand-painted patterns of dotted lines in curving “V” shapes surround the lid’s rim. The shape and decoration of this basket indicate it was likely made in the Eastern Woodlands region of North America, possibly in Vermont or upstate New York.
