Bequest of Henry Francis du Pont
Rhode Island, Connecticut or Massachusetts, New England, United States, North America
Previously attributed to Newport, Rhode Island, 1735-50. However, stylistic features such as the pronounced overhang of the top, the bold cyma curves of the skirt, the thick legs and clublike feet, combined with the unusually thick stock of the rails, all suggest an origin outside a major urban area, in Rhode Island or in adjacent areas of Connecticut or Massachusetts.
