William Calder apprenticed with Samuel E. Hamlin Jr in his native Providence before working in Philadelphia for a year. Calder was back in Providence by 1817 at the latest, at which point he purchased molds from Josiah Keene and opened his own shop. Charles Plumly worked as a journeyman for Calder in Providence in 1829.
