This lam is part of a loom that was used in southeastern Pennsylvania for over two hundred years. A loom's lams (also called lamms or countermarches) are attached by cords to both the underside of the shafts and the treadles. The lams help in raising and lowering the shuttles when the weaver works his treadles.
