Stauffer maintains Norman is of mediocre importance as an engraver, with his greatest fame seeming to rise from the fact that his 1779 portrait of Washington is the earliest known of that subject. He was also publisher of the Boston Magazine, 1783-86, and the Boston City Directory, 1789-1830.
