In addition to his publishing activites, Armstrong became a major figure in Massachusetts politics beginning in the early 1820s when he was elected to the Massachusetts state house of representatives. He went on to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts (1833-36), Governor (1835-36), and Mayor of Boston (1836).

Frontispiece to Leonard Woods, A sermon preached at Haverhill, Mass., in remembrance of Mrs. Harriet Newell, wife of the Rev. Samuel Newell, missionary to India who died at the Isle of France, Nov. 30, 1812, aged 19 years; to which are added Memoirs of her life (Boston: Samuel T. Armstrong, 1814). Armstrong published four editions of this book in 1814 alone, unsure in which edition(s) this engraving appeared.
