Jacob Maentel was born in Kassel, Hessia, Germany, on October 15, 1778. He immigrated to America by 1811, when he applied for citizenship in York County, Pennsylvania. Maentel worked as a portrait painter in southeastern Pennsylvania, including the Schaefferstown area of Lebanon County, before moving to New Harmony, Indiana, in the late 1830s.
